guilty of stealing books from the Maritime
Institute Library over a fifteen-year period.
More
than one hundred books belonging to the

after Mrs Connie Dergess, the accused's

police to report a burglary. 'He can't help
it.
He
has a compulsion. It's (4) got
out of control,' Mrs Dergess is (5) said
to have told police.
On
investigating the burglary in the Dergess
household, Sergeant Darius Cooke (6) became
suspicious when he noticed the large number
of books belonging to the Maritime Institute
Library.
To general laughter from the public galleries,
Sergeant Cooke (7) told
the
court that the Maritime library is 'known
to leak books.'
As
a regular visitor to the library, Dergess
was well liked and trusted. Staff sometimes
even (8) left
him in charge if they needed to leave their
desk for a few minutes.
It
is believed that Dergess will be (9) sentenced
today. His barrister, Harold Knight, yesterday
asked the court to take pity on his client
because of his poor health and previous
good behaviour.
