Task 2 (3-4 minutes)
Your school authorities plan to introduce the
following changes. You are discussing their strong
and weak points with your friend to choose the
one both of you think should be introduced first.
The student begins the conversation.
A new school uniform
-
- I don't like the idea of a school uniform. You
get sick and tired of wearing the same clothes
all the time.
- Many students hate the uniform style, so a new
design won't make any difference.
- It's an unpleasant feeling to be one of hundreds;
you lose your individuality.
- It would be a waste of money for those whose
old uniform is still in good condition.
+
- A new uniform may look more stylish.
If the student is totally against the idea of
wearing a uniform, use the following:
- I think it's good. It makes students more disciplined.
- Those students whose parents cannot afford stylish
clothes will feel more comfortable.
- You won't have to think about what to put on;
the school uniform is always at hand.
One hour lunch break
-
- Classes will be over too late and we will get
back home too tired.
- We may not find much to do during such a long
break. It may be a waste of time.
- We may not be able to do our homework at lunch
break because it may be too noisy and you can
easily get distracted.
- We may not be allowed to leave the school at
lunch break.
+
- We may have time to go for a walk or just relax
talking with friends.
-We could do part of the homework and have more
free time when we come back home.
- Those who live close to school could have lunch
at home.
One day off school to study on your own
-
- I do not think many students will be for it.
We will have seven or eight classes a day.
- We will have much more homework to do and will
be completely exhausted by the weekend.
+
- We would have more time to do things we are
really interested in.
-We could have shorter breaks and we would not
stay that long.
One more PE (Physical Education) class
-
- Classes are boring. we have to wait too long
before we have a chance to practise any activity.
- Many students don't enjoy sports; they'd rather
do something different; it's much more fun to
read a book or watch TV.
- Some students are not good at sports; they don't
feel comfortable when they can't handle things
that others do quite easily.
+
- It's very good to have one more PE class a week
because we will keep fit.
- PE classes are sort of relaxation during a difficult
day.
- If we have one more PE class we will be able
to do a greater variety of sports activities.
Note: Make sure all the options have been discussed.
When discussing each option first use the information
that is contrary to what the student says.
You may choose to make use of some ideas only.
Do not speak first all the time but ask the student
what she/he thinks about the options.
Invite the student to come up with her/his suggestions.
especially if she/he readily agrees with the things
you say.
If the student says all the time. "What do
you think about it?" without expressing her/his
own opinion, say: "Sony, 1 don't know"
or "I'm not sure. How do you feel about it?"
SKILLS TO BE TESTED
The student is expected to demonstrate her/his
ability to:
- initiate and maintain conversation:
- explain the situation
- come up with suggestions
- give good reasons
- find out her/his partner's attitudes
- invite the partner to come up with suggestions
- agree or disagree with her/his partner's opinion
- reach an agreement by taking into account the
partner's attitudes
